The Labour Inspectorate is a division of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) which investigates and enforces statutory employment standards. Any employer can be approached by the Labour Inspector and asked (or required) to cooperate with an investigation. Employers may be approached as a result of a complaint from a current or former employee. However, the Labour Inspectorate may also approach employers systematically or randomly, for example, as part of an audit of Holidays Act compliance
in a particular industry.
