Protecting whistleblowers: preparing for the new law

The Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Bill (“the Bill”) will, once in force, replace the Protected Disclosures Act 2000 (“the 2000 Act”). At the time of writing the Bill is currently at the Second Reading stage, with the Select Committee having reported back on the Bill at the end of March 2021. The commencement date stated in the current version of the Bill is 1 July 2021. This article sets out key features of the proposed new law as it currently stands. As the Bill has not yet been through the complete Parliamentary process, it is important to bear in mind that there may be further changes to the Bill before it becomes law.
